AWS ER309 is a filler metal often used in submerged arc welding (SAW). It is classified as a "stainless steel" filler metal, and the "309" in the name indicates that it is similar in composition to Type 309 stainless steel. It has a tensile strength of 610 MPa.
AWS ER309 is used for welding stainless steels and can be used in all welding positions. Because of its corrosion resistance, it is commonly used in the food processing, chemical processing and pharmaceutical industries. It is also used in the petrochemical and power generation industries.
In general, the selection of filler metal for SAW should be based on base metal properties, weld location, service environment, and any code or specification requirements.
